Finding Cheap Gold Lockets
When looking around for jewelry, I find it’s common to ask where to find the best stuff for the lowest prices. It’s always important to stretch our precious dollars as far as possible, especially when it comes down to luxury items. So keeping that in mind, what’s the best way to find a cheap gold locket that also has some decent quality to it?
The Fundamentals
While taste and style matter significantly, poor or shoddy craftsmanship will never do. It’s no good to find a great deal just to get a piece of jewelry that’ll literally fall apart in short order.
When looking at gold lockets, always make sure the clasp is good. This is harder to do on the internet than in person, but sometimes you can get a good angle on the clasp to see how it’s made. If you see any solder marks, it’s poor quality and just won’t do, no matter how cheap it is.
What’s the Most Important Thing?
Before you go shopping, make sure you know what’s the most important thing to you. Is it gold quality and karat quantity? Are you looking for a particular shape or pattern on the locket? Does size matter? Do you want there to be gems of some kind embedded in the locket? Knowing the answers to these questions will save you a lot of time and let you know about what prices you can expect for decent quality merchandise.
The cheapest I’ve seen gold lockets for are about $20 or so, but personally I wouldn’t get them. Anything cheaper than the $50 range tends to be silver with a gold coating. If I’m going to go and buy a gold locket, it better darn well be some kind of solid gold! If it seems too cheap, it’s probably not pure.
In the $50-$100 range you can expect to see some decent quality gold lockets. Some are mixed with silver inlays, some have mother of pearl to reduce the gold content, but in general you can expect that in this price range you’re generally not being ripped off.
Anything you see in the less than $100 range that claims to have some precious gemstone in it is most likely lying to you. Make sure you don’t get duped into some colored quartz or glass ripoff.
For those in the UK, take a look at the argos catalogue if you need to find some high quality affordable gold lockets.
The Bottom Line
In general, go with your gut. If you feel something’s too good to be true, it most likely is. As the romans liked to say, ‘Let the buyer beware!’
